AEW Stars Explain Why They Rejected WWE Offers AEW/WWE

Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher of Aussie Open have revealed that they received offers from WWE prior to joining AEW.

While Davis and Fletcher started the year in NJPW, the duo revealed in February that they were free agents.

There was a lot of speculation about the duo’s next moves, before they ultimately signed with AEW full-time in May.

Prior to this, it had been reported that both AEW and WWE were interested in signing the two stars.

Speaking on Talk Is Jericho, Aussie Open recalled their NJPW exits.

Confirming that at one point the duo rejected offers from WWE, Mark Davis said:

“We hit a point and hit a threshold where, we put the time in, we waited and committed to New Japan, we had offers from WWE to do NXT and NXT UK, that we refused, because we wanted to commit to doing New Japan, and it was a difficult struggle.”

Commenting on talks the duo had with WWE, Fletcher said:

“The first time we spoke to them was 2019. It was when we were just gearing up for World Tag League. It was for a NXT UK deal.

“We were like, ‘We want to do this New Japan thing, maybe we can revisit it after that.’ That’s how it was left. The injury happens, COVID happens, the next time we spoke to them was this year when we talked to New Japan, they were saying ‘wait’ and we put feelers out everywhere and we had a little bit of a conversation.

“It didn’t get too deep, but there was interest there. The best situation was for us here. The talks didn’t get super deep.”

Aussie Open were prominently featured at the August 27 All In London show, dropping the ROH Tag Team Championship to MJF and Adam Cole ahead of their AEW World Title main event.

Spoilers have emerged on MJF and Cole’s opponents for this weekend’s All Out pay-per-view, which you can read more about right here.
