WWE A top WWE star has revealed how Rey Mysterio has inspired her.
Rey Mysterio is widely regarded as one of the greatest luchadors in the history of professional wrestling with a career that has spanned 30 years.
Mysterio is a Grand Slam Champion in WWE and 2006 Royal Rumble winner. It is easy to see why many of today’s wrestlers have been inspired by the legend.
One such star is SmackDown star, Damage CTRL member and current WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY.
Speaking with Tokyo Sports, SKY revealed that she imagined competing in the ring when she used to watch Rey Mysterio when she was younger. On the inspiration she drew from Mysterio, IYO said:
“I became a professional wrestler when I was 16 years old, and when I was 17 or 18, I saw Rey Mysterio and thought that someday I too wanted to be a superstar in America.”
“I thought that seeing him defeat larger opponent with his three-dimensional movements might be a clue that I could be successful even with my size.”
“But now I’m hugging Rey Mysterio at the venue. When I said, ‘I admire you,” he said, ‘It’s an honor.’ He was a very nice person (laughs).”
IYO SKY is set to defend the WWE Women’s Championship against Asuka on tonight’s September 22 edition of SmackDown.
