WWE The first winner of a brand new WWE championship has officially been crowned.
In the finals of the WWE Speed tournament, which has been spanning several weeks – WWE Raw star Ricochet took on Smackdown’s Johnny Gargano to crown the first-ever champion of the experimental new brand.
In line with the WWE Speed rules Ricochet and Gargano battled it out under the strict five minute time limit.
However, it would not take Ricochet the full five minutes to pick up the win as he defeated Gargano with 40 seconds to spare via a springboard cutter – making him the first-ever WWE Speed Champion in the process.
This is Ricochet’s fourth championship victory in WWE, having previously held the NXT North American Championship, United States Championship and Intercontinental Championship.
Ricochet will not have long to wait to defend his newly won title as it was also announced that another tournament will be held to crown the Highlight of the Night’s first challenger.
The tournament consists of just four stars as Ivar faces off with Apollo Crews, while Legado Del Fantasia’s Berto takes on New Catch Republic’s Tyler Bate.
The winners of those two bouts will then face off for a chance to challenge Ricochet for the WWE Speed Championship.
