Former WWE World Champion Rey Mysterio has revealed the “best thing that could have happened” to his son Dominik Mysterio.
Being a second generation star in pro wrestling can be a double edged sword for most performers.
On one hand, it can provide early opportunities in a fledging star’s career. However, it can also create an unfavorable perception of you in the fans’ minds.
Appearing on the JAXXON PODCAST, WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio discussed the difficulties that his son Dominik has had to experience being a second generation star. He said:
“The career that I’ve had, the longevity. [I] started at the age of 14. I’m 49 now. So I’ve been grinding for the past 35 years in this business, this profession.”
“For my son to come in out of nowhere and not have my style, have a different build. he’s 6’1. He’s about 190.”
“So it was just, it was very hard for him at the beginning to try to adapt and find his role as a wrestler.”
“The comparisons were, they were made and of course, he couldn’t live up to ’em. Not until we separated and he continued on his own path without having his dad by his side. And that was the best thing that could have ever happened to him.”
Dominik Mysterio started to appear alongside his father Rey starting in 2019. The duo captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championships before “Dirty Dom” turned on Rey at Clash At The Castle 2022.
Dominik has since become one of the most detestable heels in all of WWE as part of The Judgment Day with Rhea Ripley, Finn Balor, JD McDonagh and current World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest.
