AEW Star Discusses Decision To Leave WWE WWE/AEW

AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Mone has opened up about her decision to walk away from WWE and leaving behind Sasha Banks.

In May 2022, the former Sasha Banks walked out of WWE along with her tag team partner, Naomi, with an official company statement at the time stating:

“During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk and walked out.”

During a recent appearance on WFAN, Mone touched upon her departure from WWE, saying:

“For so many years, everyone wants the tea on that drama. You’re not going to get it unless you buy the book maybe ten years later.”

She would go on to discuss a contributing factor to her departure, going on to say:

“For me, I went from a Legit Boss to a CEO because I wanted to grow. There was something in my soul that said, ‘You need to grow.’ I wanted to be the CEO of my own life.

“There was a light source that came into my heart that day. ‘You have to do what’s right for you. What’s happening right now at this moment is not right. You have to take your life in your hands and go make it happen. Go make your heart happy. Go let them know that what they’re doing right now is wrong and show them.’ I did.

“I had to let them know that I am the right one that you messed with that day, and now here I am today, one of the highest-paid women in women’s wrestling history. The TBS Champion, going after the New Japan Strong Women’s Championship.

“I get to do so much of my dreams because of that day that I walked out and trusted my heart.”

It had previously been reported that, before signing with AEW, Mone had an asking price “above” that which “Charlotte Flair received on her new WWE deal.”

In late 2023, it was stated that Flair had signed a deal what gave her “one of the highest paid deals to a woman in WWE history.”

Mone went on to sign a deal that, according to Dave Meltzer, made her “the highest paid woman in pro-wrestling” and made her AEW debut in March 2024.
